Our History

The story of Byrd-Watson Drug Co. began in 1906 when L.H. Byrd and Lou A. Watson established their pharmacy business in Centralia, Illinois. Originally called the Red Cross Drug Co., the name changed in 1917 to Byrd-Watson Drug Co. at the state’s request - due to potential confusion with the international charity organization.

In July 1922, a second store opened at the corner of Oak and Broadway, offering not only pharmacy services but also a soda fountain and full meals. Later that year, the flagship store relocated to Broadway and Tate Avenue, also complete with an expanded lunch counter.

The 1932 Silver Brothers Furniture Store explosion caused significant damage to Byrd-Watson's building, but restoration efforts were swift. During the repair process, a new soda fountain was installed, featuring a distinctive black marble counter and classic mirrored decor.

World War II brought challenges, but Byrd-Watson adapted by combining locations to streamline operations. In 1961, Paul Reuter took ownership of the business, succeeded by Ralph Sisson, Charles Farrell, and later Wes Breeze in 1964. These leaders ensured Byrd-Watson's growth while preserving its community-focused spirit.

In 1972, Byrd-Watson Drug moved to the current location in Fairview Park Plaza. Long time pharmacist, Kim (Selle) Wieter, purchased the pharmacy in 2023.

Through decades of innovation and service, Byrd-Watson remains deeply rooted in its heritage, continuing to serve Centralia and beyond with the integrity and care that define our tradition.
